A Self Portrait: Reflection

Dec 2021, 13” x 9.5’, Cotton yarn, roving, novelty yarn, leather, fabric scraps, cord

This weaving began with the idea of exploring my relationship to my own identity, specifically my gender identity, through fiber structures. I grappled with the concept of representing something so intangible through an abstract art-making process.

While creating this weaving I kept in mind the main theme I wanted to convey: Reflection. Through the colors, composition, and ultimately installation, the theme of reflection appears in a metaphorical and literal sense. Metaphorically, the colors represent a blending of what we typically associate with femininity and masculinity. While the interlocking fibers of the weaving constitutes a geometric foundation, the weaving pattern creates organic movement. In the literal sense, the saturated colors on both ends create a ‘reflection’ or mirrored effect.

Close-up, the weaving is unique in every section acting as a continuation of fiber exploration from my last project. This variation along with the shifting color mixing of each pass establishes an ever-changing motif throughout the piece.
